Tom Clark (1. März 1941 - 18. August 2018, 77 Jahre) war ein amerikanischer Dichter, Herausgeber und Biograf.

Ausbildung und persönliches Leben

Clark wurde in der Near West Side von Chicago geboren und besuchte die Fenwick High School in Oak Park. Nach der High School besuchte er die University of Michigan, wo er einen Hopwood Award für Lyrik erhielt. Anschließend erhielt er ein Fulbright-Stipendium für ein Graduiertenstudium am Gonville and Caius College in Cambridge, England (1963-5), bevor er (auf Anraten von Donald Davie) an der neu gegründeten University of Essex promovierte. Während seines Aufenthalts in Großbritannien trampte Clark bekanntlich in Begleitung von Allen Ginsberg durch Somerset.

Am 22. März 1968 heiratete er Angelica Heinegg in der St. Mark's Church in-the-Bowery, New York City.

Karriere

Clark war von 1963 bis 1973 Lyrikredakteur von The Paris Review und veröffentlichte zahlreiche Gedichtbände bei Black Sparrow Press, darunter eine Versbiografie: Junkets on a Sad Planet: Scenes from the Life of John Keats" (1994). Seine literarischen Essays und Rezensionen erschienen in The New York Times, The Times Literary Supplement, Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, London Review of Books und vielen anderen Zeitschriften. Einige seiner Essays über zeitgenössische Poesie wurden in The Poetry Beat: Reviewing the Eighties. Von 1987 bis 2008 lehrte er Poetik am New College of California.^{[failed verification]}

Für den Rest seines Lebens lebte er in Kalifornien und war ein aktiver Schriftsteller, der Gedichte, Belletristik und Sachbücher schrieb. Im Jahr 1991 veröffentlichte er eine Biografie über Charles Olson, einen seiner poetischen Mentoren, mit dem Titel Charles Olson: The Allegory of a Poet's Life (Norton: 1991).

Tod

Am Freitagabend, dem 17. August 2018, ging Clark in Berkeley, Kalifornien, über eine Straße und wurde gegen 20:40 Uhr von einem Auto angefahren. Er starb am folgenden Tag.
